Junior Tech Artist (UI Focused)

Mediatonic are looking for a Junior Tech Artist - initially for a 6-month contract - to assist with the implementation of UI designs into our games. This presents a fantastic opportunity for candidates looking to join the industry or further stretch their careers in a high performing mobile-focussed environment.

This Junior Tech Artist role will require the successful candidate to deliver the artistic vision of the UI team within the confines of engine limitations and game specifications. During implementation you will also be expected to log (and resolve) issues and ensure artwork consistently meets a high quality bar. Liaising with (and supported by) the wider team, you will deliver game features and polish existing artwork within the game to deliver a best-in-class player experience.


As Junior Tech Artist your primary function will be to use/learn to use proprietary and off-the-shelf software to support the development of Game User Interface. This role focuses on the implementation (within Unity) of pre-made UI elements, ensuring the game delivers a high quality visual experience. 


A Junior Tech Artist demonstrates raw talent and a willingness to work hard and a desire to improve. The successful candidate will possess some experience of working within the context of a commercial games project, and meet the following requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of Unity for games development
  • Working knowledge of art tools, e.g. 3DS Studio Max, Maya, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Z-Brush
  • Biased toward visuals, but able to converse with engineers and clarify technical subjects to the wider team
  • Ability to follow Technical and Art Style guides
  • Ablity to technically assess game artwork, ensures quality is matched, or corrected/logged - if assets are not up to standard
  • Ability to provide visual layouts for engineers to implement, as well as finesse existing layouts in-game, adding creative flourish in line with the style guide
  • Demonstrates awareness and an aptitude of art fundamentals (line, colour, form, shape, texture, rhythm, perspective, value, lighting & composition)
  • Effective in written and verbal communication with a consistently positive attitude
  • Assists in setting up new artist project working environments
  • Avid player of games 

Desirable skills:

  • Demonstrable understanding of visual design for User Interface and User Interface design across gaming platforms
  • Basic understanding of scripting in language
  • Theoretical understanding of visual User Experience (UX) principles - line, colour, shape, texture, value and overall composition
  • Able to self critique, receive and digest feedback to improve work 
  • Eager and motivated to learn best practices
  • Avid follower of Visual Design trends; collector of reference and analytical user of Video Game UI 
  • Demonstrable willingness to get involved in the creative conversation
  • Some experience using lighting/rendering software 
  • Traditional art skills
